Wooster Collective, a community that connects people all over the world who love all things street art, announced last week that they would be launching a YouTube channel. Now this doesn’t seem like big news to some, but the Wooster Collective (named after the street in the SoHo section of Manhattan) is constantly updating their image to include different social networking outlets. Their Facebook page is a bustling community where their 12,000 fans can interact, but also promote their own street art blogs and so on. Since their actual website doesn’t allow users to comment on their posts, the Facebook fan page is a vibrant and bustling community where people can comment on pictures posted on Wooster Collective or photos posted by other fans. Over the summer, Sara and Marc Schiller, the founders of Wooster Collective, posted a status on the Facebook page saying, “If I gave you $50 today, with the condition that you had to spend it on “art”, what would you do with it?” Their favorite response came from Ché Francisco Ortiz. They soon sent him $50 on his PayPal account and the rest is history.
What is so important about the street art community is that many times the art does not translate through just a picture. Many of these public art pieces can be some type of performance art or interactive with the public. This builds off the idea that art is not just for an elite class of people, but should be enjoyed by all. This new era of creativity can be facilitated by social networking sites, especially in cases like this…
The Schiller’s are also curretly in the process of creating a Wooster Collective iPhone app.
Very, very, very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
